What is Alively?

Alively makes it easy and fun to capture and share everyday moments in the moment with individual friends or a group through high quality video.

How do I get Alively on my phone?

Right now Alively is only available for iOS devices. If you've got an Android, contact us and we'll let you know when it's available for Android devices.

How do I create an Alively account?

Creating an Alively account is easy:

  • Download the Alively app from the iTunes App store.
  • Make sure you're using Alively on the phone you want to sign up with.
  • Open the Alively app and click “Sign-Up” on the screen.
  • Input your phone number. We'll use this to send you a code to enter via SMS to confirm you're a real person.
  • Enter the code that you received via SMS. If you have problems, click “Request New Code”.
  • Create your Alively account by adding a profile photo, Full Name, Username (needs to be more than 3 characters) and a password (you'll use this to login). The password needs to be at least 6 characters.
  • Enable Permissions to enable the camera, get notifications, and allow access to your address book so we can help you find friends.
  • Add people from your contacts list that you'll want to share with. You can edit these people at anytime.
  • You're in! If you ever log out and need to log in, you'll use your username or e-mail address and password to log in.

Does Alively cost money?

Alively is free to download and use.

Can I use Alively on my computer?

Right now, Alively is only available on iOS mobile devices.

Why do I have to sign up with my phone?

We use your phone number to verify you're a real person. We also use your phone number to help you find friends to share with through your contacts list.

Why do I have to upload a picture?

This is used for your Alively profile, which is what friends will see when they add you as someone to share with.


Adding People & Groups To Share With

What does it mean to add someone?

When you add someone from your contacts, they will show up on your camera as someone to share with. You can select them as someone to share with on any video and can remove them from your camera screen at any time.

Can I add someone to share with who isn't on Alively?

Yes, you can add anyone from your contacts. Those who aren't on Alively will get an SMS with the video caption and a mobile link they can click to watch the video. They will not be able to comment on the video unless they join Alively.

Who can add me on Alively?

If someone has your phone number, they can add you as someone to share with. They can also add you if you send them a video.

How do I remove someone I added to my camera?

You can hold on their face, and you'll see an option to remove them. You can also manage who shows up on your camera screen by clicking on (+) icon.

If I remove someone from my camera, will they know?

No, they don't get notified that you removed them.

How do I create a Group to share with?

If you click on the (+), you'll see a +Group link in the top right to click. Enter a Group Name (people in the group will not know the name of the Group), select people from your contacts to add to the Group and then click “Save” in the top right. The Group will get added to your camera screen as someone to share with.

Can I remove people from a group?

Yes. You can either long press on the Group you want to edit on the Camera Screen. When you long press on it, you'll see an option to Edit or Remove. Click on Edit, remove or add people, and then click “Save” in the top right.

You can also edit a group by clicking on (+) and then the +Groups link in the top right. You'll then see a list of Groups you've created show up in the menu below. Swipe left on the Group you want to edit.

How do I edit a Group name?

You can either long press on the Group you want to edit on the Camera Screen. When you long press on it, you'll see an option to Edit or Remove. Click on Edit, and you'll be taken to the edit screen where you can change the title of the Group. Click “Save” in the top right to save changes. Sharing & Recording Videos

Who can see the videos I record?

You decide who can see each individual video based on who you select to share with on your camera screen before you start sharing live, during your recording or people you add to share with after you record. If you don't select anyone, then only you will be able to see the video.

Who can see the videos on my profile?

Each person going to your profile will only see the videos you've shared with them. So if you haven't shared anything with them, they will only see your profile photo, username and bio information.

How do I make a video private?

If you want to record a private video, just don't select anyone to share with and start recording. Only you will be able to see it unless you decide to share it with people after the recording. If you've already shared a video and want to make it private, go to the video and click on the audience icon next to the comments icon. This will give you a list of people you've shared with. You can then swipe left, and click “Remove” to un-share the video with the person. The person will no longer see the video in their Videos section or on your Profile.

Can I add people to share with after I start recording?

You can add people to share with while you're recording by clicking on the (+) icon, which will open up the audience selector. Just like on the camera screen, click on the people you want the video to be shared with.

After you're done recording, you can also share the video with more people by going to the video and clicking on the options menu in the top right (...) and selecting “Share”.

Can I un-share a video with someone?

Yes. You can un-share a video with someone. Go to the video and click on the “share with” person icon next to the comments icon. This will give you a list of people you've shared with. You can then swipe left, and click “Remove” to un-share the video with the person. The person will no longer see the video in their Videos section or on your Profile.

Who can see the list of people I shared a video with?

Anyone who you shared the video with can click on the audience icon next to the comments icon on the video, and see who you shared the video with. They can also click on their profiles to see their profile bio.

What does “watched” mean under a person's name who I shared with?

This means the video was delivered and the person watched the video.

What connection do I need to use Alively?

You can use Alively to record video regardless of your connection. The video just won't be shared live and we'll send it to the people you shared with as soon as you do have a connection.

What does “sharing live” vs. “recording” mean?

When the indicator says “sharing live” you're sharing the video as you're recording with people or groups you selected. If the indicator says “recording” it means you either don't have a good enough connection to share live or that you didn't select anyone to share with.

How long are videos available?

Videos are available to be watched indefinitely unless you delete the video or un-share the video with someone, which will mean they will no longer be able to see it.

How do I upload a video from my camera roll?

Go to your Alively profile and just below your profile bio, you'll see an option to “Upload Video”. Click on that and select a video from your camera roll to upload. You can also add a title and select people you want to share the video with.

Can I watch a video after sharing it live?

Yes, the video will be available on your profile for viewing even after you share it live.

Do videos take up space on my phone?

No need to worry about your phone storage. All Alively videos are stored securely in the cloud.

Is there a limit to how long I can record?

You can use Alively to record video up to 5 hours long. Because Alively captures high quality video, we encourage you to connect to Wi-Fi for sharing long videos to limit data usage.

Can I record a video in landscape?

Yes, you can record a video in landscape. The person will just have to turn their phone to watch it in landscape.

How do I edit the video title after recording the video?

Go to the video, and click on the options menu in the top right (...) and then select “Edit Title”. Edit the title, and save.


Watching Videos

How do I leave a comment on a video?

You can leave a comment by going to the video (clicking on a notification, or through your “videos” section or profile), and then swipe up or clicking on the comment icon. This will open up the comment field, which will display existing comments and allow you to post a comment. Commenting is only available to users of the Alively app. Commenting is not available on videos being watched through the mobile site.

Why am I receiving a video from someone?

You're receiving a video from someone because they added you as someone to share with. They are able to add you because they have your phone number in their contacts. If you are receiving a video from someone who you don't want to get videos from, you can can block the person by clicking on the person's profile photo, and then clicking on the “...” icon in the top right, and selecting “Block User”. You can always unblock them by going into your account settings.

What do the “blue” and “red” dots next to a person's profile mean?

When you see the blue dot, it means that you haven't watched the video yet. The red dot means that the person is currently sharing live.

How do I share a video I'm watching?

Only the person who captured or uploaded the video is able to select who the video is shared with.

Why am I getting links to videos via SMS from Alively?

One of your friends is using Alively to share videos with you. Alively allows them to still share the video with you through SMS even though you don't have Alively yet. By downloading and signing up for Alively, you'll receive these videos directly on Alively and also be able to leave comments for your friends to see.


Managing Your Account

Who can see my Alively profile?

Profile name, username, photo, and bio are public but only people who you've shared your videos with can see the videos on your profile. This means that each individual person will see different videos on your profile (depending on whether you shared the video with them or not).

How do people find my profile?

People can find your profile by having your phone number in their phone address book, which then allows them to add you as someone to share with or because they were part of the audience of a video that was also shared with you.

When someone sends you a video, any of those recipients are able to see you in the audience icon of the video and can click on your profile to see your profile picture, name, username and bio. They cannot see any of the videos you've shared unless you have shared with them.

How do I change my profile picture?

You can change your profile picture by going to your profile and clicking on the profile photo. This will open up options to either Choose from Library, which will enable you to upload a photo from your phone or Take Photo, which will activate the front-facing camera on your phone that you can use to capture a photo for your profile picture.

How do I edit my profile bio?

You can edit your profile bio by going to the profile, and clicking the “Edit” link at the end of the existing bio or next to the “Enter your bio...” text if you don't already have one. You can write a bio up to 140 characters in length. Once you're done writing the bio, click “Save” in the top right.

How do I change my username?

You can change your username by going to your profile. Click on the gear menu in the top right, which takes you to your account settings. Once in your account settings, under “My Account” click on your Username field, which will then let you edit your existing username.

How do I block or unblock people?

You can block someone by going to their profile and clicking on the “...” link in the top right of their profile, which will then give you an option to “Block User”.

You can unblock someone by going to your profile. Click on the gear menu in the top right, which takes you to your account settings. Once in your account settings, under “Settings” click on “Blocked Users” where you'll see a list of anyone who you've blocked on Alively. You can then click on the unblock icon to the right of their name to unblock someone.

How do I manage notifications?

You can manage your notifications by going to you profile, clicking on the gear menu in the top right, which will take you to your account settings. Once in your account settings, under “Settings” click on “Notifications” where you'll be able to adjust the notifications you want on or off.

How do I log out?

You can log out of Alively by going to your account settings. When in your account settings, scroll down to see “Log Out” option.

How can I delete my account?

If you want to stop using Alively, simply delete the app from your phone. If you'd like to delete your account completely, contact us at support@alive.ly.

How do I report a problem or send feedback?

If you come across an issue or a bug that you want to report, we'd love to hear about it and get it fixed asap. Your feedback helps us build a better product. Please shoot those over to feedback@alive.ly.

I didn't get a code for Alively when signing up.

If you didn't get a code when entering your number, you can click “request new code” just below the input for the verification code. If you still don't get one, go back and make sure you entered in the right phone number. If the number is correct, and you still aren't receiving a code, then shoot us a note at feedback@alive.ly

What if I forgot my password?

If you forgot your password, go to the login screen and click “Log In”. Below where you input your login information, you'll see a link that says “Forgot Password?” Click that, and you'll be asked to enter your username or e-mail and we'll send you a password reset link.
